Think of the
Iron Chef EduProtocol as a digital jigsaw activity in which the teacher can ditch their lecture to successfully shift from "sage on the stage" to "guide on the side." This EduProtocol will allow you to free up your time to provide feedback and support throughout the learning process as students use a shared-template slide deck to learn content and practice presentations. As in the TV show,
The Iron Chef, this activity is structured to allow students to complete a task using limited resources and limited time. Here's how it works: The teacher prepares a slide deck to be shared among a group of four students with links to content resources. The students research the content using the provided links and use the newly gained information to complete the task of building out the slides in a given amount of time. And just like the TV show, there is a "secret ingredient" that engages early finishers and contributes to teamwork in completing the entire slide deck. Most likely, the slides will not be students' best work at first, but over time, with weekly practice, students will gain the skills and confidence to build better and better slide decks. Remember, keep it fun for your first attempt at using the Iron Chef EduProtocol so you can teach the students the routines and expectations. Not only will this EduProtocol foster students'
creativity as they learn how to build better and better slides, it is also touches upon
collaboration and
communication as students work together to build their slides and present their work to their classmates. Further, John Hattie's research has shown that jigsaw activities have an effect size of .92. When considering the effect size of an activity, remember that a normal year's growth is .40. So anything greater that that is exceptional growth!
