The 3xCER Challenge is a great way to introduce students to a writing strategy that can develop analytical thinking and argumentative writing skills. Modifications can easily be made to turn this EduProtocol into the 3xGenre Challenge in which students write in response to a stimulus using Narrative, Informational, and Persuasive writing genres.
The Gist
Students need to be able to make a claim, state and cite evidence from a variety of sources, and then communicate their reasoning by connecting the claim and the evidence.
The Flow
Students make a claim, research with at least three data points, explain evidence, and persuade/reason by linking claim and evidence.
Academic Goals
Step 1: Introduce the topic for the claim students will make/persuade
Step 2: Adjust slide template for specific goals
Instructions
Step 1: Provide students with a question, inquiry, phenomena
Step 2: Student formulate a claim
Step 3: Students research with at least 3 data points. Teacher may need to scaffold and provide direction here.
Step 4: Students identify evidence that supports claim.
Step 5: Student explains each piece of evidence
Step 6: Student writes to persuade by linking the claim and evidence.
Adaptations
3xGenre Challenge
This adaptation is meant to help students become better writers by providing them with an opportunity to write a paragraph about a topic using three different writing genres: Narrative, Informational, and Persuasive. Share a video and task students with writing a paragraph using each of the three genres.
