Teach Better - Work Less - Achieve More: Word Up EduProtocol

The Word Up EduProtocol is a timed team challenge to support vocabulary instruction. Students collaborate to define a given vocabulary word and provide examples of the word using a GIF, Meme, and image. They also provide an historic example and modern example (for social studies classes) and use the word in a sentence. Once the slides are built, students can present from their seats in 15 - 20 seconds each.

Prepare for the Activity

1. Set up a template that includes enough space to include the following for each vocabulary word:
  • Vocabulary Word
  • Definition
  • GIF
  • Meme
  • Image
  • Use in a Sentence
    • Historic Example (for Social Studies classes)
    • Modern Example (for Social Studies classes)
2. Write the vocabulary words you would like students to learn on index cards. On the other side of the index card, write a number 1-15 (or however many vocabulary words you will be introducing to the students.

Instructions
  1. Put students in pairs.
  2. Assign one index card to each pair of students.
  3. Share the slides so that students can edit the slides.
  4. Students will locate their assigned slide (based on the number on their index card) and will spend 7-10 minutes creating their slide.
  5. After 10 minutes, the teacher will project the slides and will call on student pairs to present their work. Students will have 15-20 seconds to share their slides.
See the slide deck below for detailed instructions and examples, and feel free to make a copy of the template.
