Teach Better - Work Less - Achieve More: The Frayer EduProtocol

Are you introducing new vocabulary anytime soon? There's an EduProtocol for that! Students use the Frayer Model, created by Dorothy Frayer and her colleagues at the University of Wisconsin, to develop a deeper understanding of vocabulary. It can also be applied to other concepts in subjects such as math, science, and history. The traditional Frayer has four fields in which students provide a definition, characteristics, examples, and non-examples of a word or concept to deepen their understanding of word meanings. Students are encouraged to use images in the example and non-example fields. This EduProtocol can also be used as a Smart Start activity to help build a sense of community in your classroom as students can use a modified version of the Frayer to get to know their classmates.

See the slide deck below for some examples and a template (including instructions) to help you get started and feel free to make a copy! Once you have copied the slides, you can fill in your own content and share it with students by assigning it via Google Classroom (create an Assignment, attach the Slides, and make a copy for each student). Alternatively, you can print the template so students can complete the tasks on paper. Be sure to give students just enough time to complete the task and then have each student share their work by talking about it to a small group or the whole class in rapid-fire succession so you can formatively assess the students in real time.
